Rachel Sisoulik Riley is an elder, and the Inupiat language teacher in Anaktuvuk Pass. Rachel is a skilled mask-maker. The caribou-skin masks originated in Anaktuvuk Pass in 1950s. Masks from Anaktuvuk Pass have a very distinct style - they are made with wooden molds to shape the drying caribou skin into a face shape and then decorated with furs and claws from other harvested animals. In this video, you can watch Rachel working on the mask-making process.
